Phil Laak was raised in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and now lives in Los Angeles and San Francisco. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a degree in mechanical engineering and worked as an engineer, a repo man, a stock day-trader, and a real estate investor, prior to getting into open poker games in California.
Most of us recognize Phil Laak for his extravagant appearances at the televised World Poker Tour shows. He is also known by the nick name 'Unabomber', based on the sweatshirt he is wearing - which he got from poker professional Gus Hansen. This name has been used lightly due to the reference of a former terrorist.
In 2005, Phil Laak finished second to Johnny Chan in the World Series of Poker $2,500 Pot Limit Hold'em event. Laak has also defeated Ram "Crazy Horse" Vaswani in the William Hill Poker Grand Prix, which earned him a total of £150,000 for claiming the first place.
